Ping launches new i59 Irons

After what feels like forever in golf club years, Ping has officially replaced the long-standing iBlade in their lineup with the all-new forged i59 irons.

The name brings together two long-standing lines of irons into one, as a way to represent the next technology step for Ping’s compact players iron. The first is “i” which represents the (originally name eye) series intended to offer all-around playability, with the now extinct “S” series which included the S59- S55 which were also Ping’s first move into the blade iron marketplace, voila the i59 is born.

Technology

The i59 head features new technology for both Ping and the golf industry as a whole. Unlike other hollow core irons that are either unfilled; Ping i500, or filled with some type of polymer; TaylorMade P770, the new i59 is comprised of three individual pieces that are wedged together:

  • The fully forged and milled body
  • The HS 17-4 stainless steel face
  • Alumicore insert

The Alumicore insert is the standout piece of technology because the core of each iron is individually machined to create a precision fit. This insert not only supports the face of the iron but also saves 30 grams of material from the middle of the head that can be redistributed around the perimeter to increase forgiveness. To put that forgiveness into perspective, the i59 offers the same MOI as the larger i210.

Now it’s time to talk about the biggest buzzword of the Ping lineup that comes from its woods and hybrids, “Spinsistency”.

With the i59’s Ping is introducing new MicroMax groves to reduce variations in spin through the set and help prevent fliers produced from shots in the rough and in wet conditions.

By adjusting the geometry of grooves and placing them closer engineers were able to get on average four extra grooves on the faces of each iron to reduce fliers in the short irons and preserve spin in the long irons. This leads to tighter dispersion and less variability in ball flight windows.
